BTI - Continuing Education Workshops

Introduction to Asian Bodywork

with Robert Malik Lawrence, L.Ac.

June 23-24 | Monday-Tuesday, 9:30am-5:30pm
14 continuing education contact hours | $285 | practitioners only

Qi and WaterThe traditional bodywork of China, known as Tui Na, has been described as “acupuncture without needles”. The foundation of this classical form is based on the muscle-tendon channel system. As the name implies, this channel system is comprised of the soft tissue structures of the body -- through which flows the Qi, or life energy.

The muscle-tendon channels -- like each of the seven meridians systems of Chinese Medicine -- have their own anatomy, physiology and pathology. The knowledge of these channels and their qualities, provides a unique perspective to assess and treat a variety of conditions and chronic pain syndromes.

In addition, this workshop will introduce you to some of the treatment techniques used in Tui Na, such as rubbing, scrubbing and rolling. Though aspects of these methods will be familiar to most massage and bodywork therapists, they have their own unique qualities which you will learn as well.

As the muscle-tendon channels provide a foundation for assessment, QiGong provides a foundation for the treatment methods used in Tui Na. In this class you will learn a personal QiGong practice that will support your work as a therapist. In addition, participants will also explore how to integrate QiGong into their hands-on treatments.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • The muscle-tendon channels, their locations, anatomy, physiology and pathology
  • Assessment and treatment based on the physiology and pathology of the muscle-tendon channels
  • QiGong cultivation for personal development and self care
  • Tui Na techniques and applications
  • How to use Tui Na and QiGong to assess and treat conditions such as: chronic pain, headache, back pain and sports injuries
