Ayurvedic Healing and Philosophy: An Introduction

This course serves as an introduction to Ayurveda, the ancient medical system of India. The course will explain the terms, theory, and philosophy that form the foundation of Ayurveda, and also review several different types of Ayurvedic massage, with a practical focus. This course is appropriate for those who have no knowledge of Ayurveda as well as those who want to expand their knowledge of Ayurveda and its practical applications to massage and bodywork.
Course contents:
- Introduction to Ayurvedic Philosophy
- The three doshas: vata, pitta, kapha, and their physical, mental and emotional manifestations; prakruti (individual constitution)
- The seven dhatus (tissues) and their formation
- The malas (metabolic waste products) and ama (toxins)
- The Ayurvedic view of the disease process
- Creating balance through dinacharya (daily routine) and rutacharya (seasonal routine)
- Marma (subtle energetic points similar to acupuncture points)
- Ayurvedic dietary recommendations
- Practical applications: qualities of different oils; herbalized oil preparations, and treatment modalities: shirodhara, pinda swedana, abhyanga
Thomas Mitchell is a NC Licensed Chiropractic Physician, who has pursued an interest in Ayurveda since the early 1980's. Since 2002, he has worked closely with Dr. Pankaj Naram, one of the world's leading experts in nadi vigyan (Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis), whose patients have included the Dalai Lama and Mother Theresa. Dr. Naram is the current head of an ancient unbroken lineage of doctors that originated 2,500 years ago with Buddha's personal physician. Dr. Mitchell sees patients together with Dr. Naram in clinics in both India and the U.S. -- and has an active Ayurveda practice of his own in Raleigh, NC specializing in both chronic and acute health conditions.
A graduate of the Acupuncture Society of America post-doctoral program, Dr. Mitchell was certified to practice Acupuncture in 1998. He also teaches yoga courses for the Art of Living Foundation, a non-profit educational and service organization. Dr. Mitchell speaks Spanish fluently and actively serves the Hispanic community in North Carolina. He received his doctor of chiropractic degree from Parker College in Dallas, TX.
