BTI - Continuing Education Workshops

Elements of Therapeutic Communication

with Jeanne van Gemert, MA, MFA, LPC, LMBT

October 31 | Friday, 9:30am-5:30pm
7 continuing education contact hours | $145 | Practitioners only

While good non-verbal communication is the essence of the massage therapist/client relationship, skillful use of verbal communication can deepen the quality of the relationship, the therapist's role, and the client's therapeutic experience.

In this experiential workshop, you will be introduced to a model of therapeutic communication which supports the needs and challenges of hands-on practitioners. We will identify the purpose of this specific form, and explore elements including the role of words, underlying concepts, use of body, timing, tone, personal boundaries and scope of practice. You will learn essential skills such as reflective listening, managing one’s personal reactions, creating a safe and strong space, and making choices about how to move from soma to psyche... and from psyche to soma.

These concepts and skills are valuable in enhancing the client’s experience of the bodywork session, in providing ways to manage emotional states, and in allowing for profound change on a whole-person level.

NOTE: This workshop meets the requirements for ethics education for license renewal with the NC Board of Massage & Bodywork Therapy and for recertification with NCBTMB. NC license renewals that are postmarked by October 31 meet the renewal deadline.
