If prostitutes become freer to ply their trade here, why wouldn't more of them come to the area?

Hmmmm. Interesting proposition. Not sure that many ladies seriously contemplated the choice between sexwork and dishing coffees at Tim Hortons. Most I know are offended by the notion of menial labour. Plus, I would think personal values have a pretty big part in the decision to stock shelves vs. getting naked with strangers.

But I do think decriminalization will make getting into the business more plausible to more women. I also think the free market is going to put a damper on prices. Look at what happened in 2008 and early 2009, and the influx of cheap service on CL.

Interesting times we live in.

@Auggie:I seriously doubt that things will change all that much, if at all. People don't change their habits that drastically. When walking around topless became legal, did you see many topless women running around?

Knowing a few Companions, this line of work is not for everyone. It takes mental resilience and a particular outlook on life. Money is not a motivator. If it was, we would all be trying to be financiers, doctors, or lawyers.

The government's position is a moralistic standpoint aimed to appease the religious and the prudish. It has no bearing on the central matter, which is the safety of sex workers.

There will be no Hooker Apocalypse, anymore than there was a Boobie Apocalypse*.







* Boobie Apokalypse would be a great name for a rock band.

I see both sides of the argument here. I can see some MPs getting a little carried away with their advertising and offering of services. Think of the pressure on some MPAs who don't want to offer FS being in the same location as those that do? I guess there are still some guys who only want a happy ending as opposed to FS (and I still don't get that....why some guys are paying top dollar for hands on as opposed to FS).

The thing is, if the laws are overturned, new ones will have to be written to insure that there are some controls in place.

For eg:
No MPs or Multi-SP incalls in residential neighbourhoods.
No MPs or Incalls within x kms of schools
No public solicitation on residential streets etc.

I fully support a woman's right to choose what she does, and fully support this industry, but I most certainly wouldn't want my kids to have to walk past SWs on the way to or from school and I certainly wouldn't want a parade of horny customers walking up and down the hall in my Bay street condo (or getting BJs in front of my house).

People are people and there WILL be those that abuse their new found freedoms....

But those are regulatory issues. Maybe they'll pass an act on prostitution, or leave it to the municipalities to regulate.

The decision is great for hobbyists. It can be great for MPs because of the market space they already occupy, but also bad because of existing restrictions.

I think having 2 women working together in a residential area or in a Bay St. condo should be allowed, if the clients are noisy or rowdy that could currently happen with any party or function and people would get a warning from the police for that issue. Not for having a party, that's okay.

But yes, I wouldn't want to live next to a brothel with more than 2 women.
