How do I introduce myself with a nickname?

Everyone's been calling me a nickname that has almost nothing to do with my actual name for several years now. But now I'm going off to college, and meeting new people for the first time in ages (I live in a really small town. Know everybody.) So when I introduce myself, do I just say "I'm Jane Doe, but people call me Ashley"? Or is there something better to say?
Also, in class - my name would be on the class list as 'Jane Doe', so what do I say when a professor calls on me? (It's a small college, they learn the students' names, according to my friend who goes there). I figure if I say 'Ashley', then they'll have no idea why I'm there, there's no 'Ashley' on the list. But I don't respond very well to my real name any more, and would prefer that everyone call me by my nickname.
So I'm sure I'm making something pretty simple very complicated, but I just have no idea how to handle this. Thanks for any help!

Just tell them what your nickname is. If it is weird (like my nickname BILF) people will probably ask about it. Then you can say "Oh, my name is Magic 8 Ball, but everyone calls me BILF because they say I am a "Ball I'd Like to F***"

Yeah, just say exactly that! Or say "Hi, my name is Ashley. Well, my real name is Jane, but just call me Ashley."

The way you mentioned is just fine. Don't worry about the professor though. You have a right to go by a different name. Some will even ask if anyone goes by a different name then right it down so they know that is what you prefer. Others may just take roll and not ask so you can stay after class to let the professor know about the name situation. It might take them a few times to remember but they'll get it.

just go by ashley. when you meet someone, say 'hey, i'm ashley'.
and talk to your professors before the class starts and tell them something like, 'I'm Jane, but i prefer Ashley, so could you call me that instead?'

simply tell the instructor when he/she calls your name that you prefer to be called ashly, or go to them after class and tell them. if you tell them if/when they do roll, then the class will also know your name preference.

I think since its Ashley your used to and Ashley you want, thats what you should introduce yourself as. Saying hi im Jane Doe but call me ashley is a little strange=]. when people ask about just say thats what everyone you know calls you and what you go by. they will understand!

Especially if the teachers learn names, they'll ask if you preferred to be called something else. Make friends and your nickname will get around. I'd just say, "Hey, my name is Jane Doe. But you can call me Ashley. Everyone calls me since as long as I can remember."

its pretty easy you just introduce yourself then say.... "but everyone calls me (fill in the blank)"
