Can anybody recommend a good course for this in the States?

We did this in school and they used a video. I haven't seen a course anywhere, but thought I'd share that there is a video out there.

I just purchased the video on ebay, brand new for only $5.00. It hasn't arrived yet, but when it does I'll watch it and tell you how it is. You can go to ebay and in the search engine type "Indian Head Massage" and they will come up and you can see what you think.

I just received the dvd I mentioned above that I had gotten off ebay. It was pretty good. I have nothing to compare it to for this type of massage, but I thought for the money, it was definitely informative enough...especially incorporating aromatherapy into the oils to aid for hair growth, etc.
What I found to be quite interesting is that the scalp manipulations, for the most part, were the exact same techniques that I learned in cosmetology school. The standard textbook (called "Milady's cosmetology textbook" or something like that) is on ebay now very cheap - I saw one for 5 dollars - so you could easily get this dvd and the textbook with the illustrated instructions for less than $25 including shipping.

Just more FYI, that textbook also has illustrated instructions on hand and foot massages as well, which I've seen used in several different types of massage.

Keep in mind you are getting this information from me - a student - so what I think is informative may be useless information for you "veterans" out there! lol

What was the name of the DVD you got off eBay? Who was the presenter? There are lots of "Indian Head Massage" DVDs
Was it done seated in a normal chair? I can't recall the Milady's textbook including any seated massage.

It was done seated in a chair, and also shown seated but resting the chest on a pillow - the head was upright. The DVD is called "A Day At The Spa - Indian Head Massage". I do not know who presents it, but it is produced by Delta Corporation in 2004. As for the Milady's book - It wasn't called massage at all. It was scalp manipulations, and it was taught (I believe) as a service to provide rather than just shampooing the hair. It wasn't called massage, but manipulations, and though the Indian Head Massage DVD showed more than what was in the book, from watching her movements I could swear it was what I was tested on in school. When I went to ebay, I asked the seller if the book included the illustrations on the scalp manipulations and he said yes. I had to order another one because I have lost my book from our move here to Texas. When it arrives, I'll be happy to tell you what pages they are on. (Maybe they took it out of the newer texts? I went to school back in 1992, so that may be why you don't recall it).

Thanks, Heather! I'm just seeing this now. I'm going to pull out my good ol' Milady's Standard for Estheticians, to see if they included any scalp manipulations... probably not, I'm thinking... but maybe I'll get lucky.

I have a great little book that I bought at Borders quite a while ago, and liked it so much that I recently bought a backup copy, thinking that I'm sure I don't want to be without it.

It is part of a 'Teach Yourself' series of books and the name might actually be Teach Yourself Indian Head Massage

The illustrations are very good and all techniques are easy to understand. It's quite a comprehensive little book and well worth the $10.95 cost.

If anyone gets it, let me know what you think. I just love this little book!
