Hi folks,

So one of my New Year's resolutions is to get serious about finishing my energy work certification, and then get with some more continuing ed. I'm starting by looking at prices/dates/locations, and I'm curious to hear from folks about the different kinds of cranio out there...

Milne is close to home, but Upledger swings by once in a while. Can anyone speak to the differences/pros/cons of each?

Who is Milne, and what do they do? I have never heard of it/them/him/her.... :o

He's an osteopath that teaches "visionary craniosacral work". See http://www.milneinstitute.com/

Milne or Upledger

I've taken several classes at Esalen with the Upledger CS program. It's close to SF, has the best food, and the instructors and assistants were sueforum.xxx. The baths and views from from the cliffs are the best. A nice place to mix learning with rest.

I've met Dr. Milne many years ago when he returned to California. His class and program are more spiritual/visionary. I have never had a Milne session.

I think it depends on your view, outlook, etc. Upledger is anatomically based and more mainstream, I think. Maybe talk to a couple of grads, get a session or ?
Hope this helps,
rubmyster

The Upledger class at Esalen seems to be like half the price of the other CST I classes. Is that because of lodging costs or some other reason? Anyone know?

Milne vs. Upledger

EM,
I think this is because Upledger has a "deal" with Esalen. It's my understanding that Upledger gets less than one-half the fee and Esalen gets the rest. I was last at Esalen about early 2005.
It's definetly cheaper than staying in a hotel, eating out, being in a room with overhead lights and no windows. Plus, once you park at Esalen your car stays put. You can walk everywhere, the grounds are wonderful.
The schedule at Esalen is kinda like this:
9:00 a- 12:30p: class
12:30-1:30: lunch
3:00p-6:00p: class
in the evening you can go and soak, hang out, or even go back to the class room and practice. This is the best as you can pick the TA's brains, get help with techniques and stuff. I have found this is the best way for me to absorb new info and have a great retreat as well.
I took a Upledger LD class at Esalen and then took the second part at a hotel in SF. I spent about twice as much, hated the classroom and lighting and rarely got outside except to run out for lunch.
My goal is to get back to Esalen soon. It's only about 75 minutes from my house.
Hope this helps,
Rubmyster

One misconception I find with CranioSacral Therapy is that it is energy work. Perhaps this is true of other styles of CST, but Upledger CST is very much rooted in the tissues of the body. There absolutely is an energetic component to the work. However, one is constantly in contact and monitoring the release from the tissues.

Even when working specifically with energy cyst release, one must be aware that there is high probability for related fascial restrictions and facilitated segments in the dural tube. Until all are addressed, the issue will probably return.

I can't speak to Milne as all my work has been with Upledger. I don't think Milne teaches anywhere near the northeast states so I don't hear about it very often around here.

My training has been through Upledger and Sacred Spaces Seminars (an organization much smaller than UI or Milne). Through my classes I've run into students who have taken with Milne and my dad has taken a Milne course a few years ago (in addition to Upledger).

I personally love Milne's books, but I've heard mixed things about the courses. It seems that the quality really varies depending upon who is teaching it. The people I know who enjoyed it really thought highly of the instructor. Other's that I've heard from found the instructor to not be very good at managing the dynamics of the group. I've also heard that they work with emotional release in the early classes. However, I stress that this is not based on my personal experience. Just what I've heard.

Personally, I think that it is best to get a firm foundation in the anatomy and to feel comfortable with your palpation skills and the fundamentals before venturing into supporting someone through emotional release. Although, emotional releases can happen when least expected or intended.

Upledger has a much more mechanical approach to the work - less esoteric than my sense of Milne. In my experience, because of that, more "traditional" practitioners (especially PTs) are more comfortable taking Upledger's approach.

I think there are definitely things to be learned from either approach.

I would suggest finding an advanced Milne practitioner and an advanced Upledger practitioner to experience the work from. See which seems to resonate the most for you. And you can also pick their brains about their class experiences - be sure to ask what they liked as well as what they DIDN'T like.

Lisa

Update: Milne failed to respond to multiple emails and phone messages from someone eager to give them money (me). I really don't know what else to say.

Update II: I spoke to someone at the Milne Institute today about registering for classes in January I forgave & forgot about the previous mishap...

Now that I'm filling out the registration form I'm having second thoughts and am on MassagePlanet researching

Somebody talk me into cranialsacral, please ;-)

Ego, I'll second it is worth your while to learn CST. You've got an incredible foundation to build on so I think you can bring truly wonderful things to the table just by adding it to your arsenal of knowledge and skillsets.

I've taken courses via Upledger and have really enjoyed them. The caliber of teaching staff is quite high and I believe the Upledger Institute spends a great deal of time and attention looking after their instructors so the coursework remains a constant as it is taught.

I haven't any direct experience with Milne. I do find the idea that his is a visionary experience very intriguing. There is an energetic quality to this work that for someone who enjoys exploring and working in energy fields the Milne take on things might be a great fit.

Goodluck on whichever you choose (((or don't choose! lol))).

EM,
I'd vote for Upledger again. I imagine that the Milne classes are taught in Bezerkly. I'd go for Esalen. I know a some of Milne's teachers and I think Upledger has better staff.
As far a Crainosacral- it's a great thing to learn. Even if you don't practice it, it's a nice thing to add at the end of the session, everyone loves a stillpoint, and you can do amazing things with less efforting.
Cheers,

Milne vs. Upledger

EM,
I think this is because Upledger has a "deal" with Esalen.
Hope this helps,
Rubmyster

I've taken several classes at Esalen with the Upledger CS program. It's close to SF, has the best food, and the instructors and assistants were sueforum.xxx. The baths and views from from the cliffs are the best. A nice place to mix learning with rest.

I've met Dr. Milne many years ago when he returned to California. His class and program are more spiritual/visionary. I have never had a Milne session.

I think it depends on your view, outlook, etc. Upledger is anatomically based and more mainstream, I think. Maybe talk to a couple of grads, get a session or ?
