new techniques- when is enough enough?

hi all,the chiro I work for asked me when she saw the laundry list of modalities I have learned:when does it get to be too much? do you use all of these modalities? how can you remember them all? do you think it's worth the big bucks for these classes?I thought about itw that I'm certified, I need the CEU's, so that's a given to do. But, do I need level 3 medical intuitive, level 5 healing touch, level 3 polarity, level 2 cranial sacral etc...?it all is blending together, and for the money that classes cost, I'm unure of what to invest in.I'm going to start college this fall, also, fo some kind of degree. Not sure what, maybe just business so I cna be smart when I start my own...thanks,energygirl

When I finished school, I was all gung ho for taking some new modalities, everything I read I thought would be the thing to make it all work and happen.  So I went to Tucson for TrP, and I took a more local class on MFR.  About that time I realized that if I continued on and on and on, I'd be a "jack of all trades" but a master of none.  So I decided I'd hold off on learning new things and concentrate on what I've already learned.  If I decide to specialize in something, like MFR, then I won't have spent a bunch on TrP or craniosacral.  Although before I go for MFR, I'll at least take a weekend on the craniosacral...There is no right or wrong answer, everyone has different capabilities and desires.  You may be able to take in and hold onto all that info, where I may not be able to do so.  Where does the humerous attach and how do you palpate it?  Is it the funny bone? NO?  Why not?

I like to learn as much about what I like the most.  Deep Tissue/Trigger point/Corrective massage.I'll take classes on Trigger point, deep tissue techniques not learned before, injury specific treatments, muscle review, ect.That way they all have something to do with each other, they make my treatments more effective or easier on me, and I don't feel overwhelmed trying to remember them all.Once in a while I will branch out and learn something different like Hot stone just for a change of pace.

Iam the same. I want to learn more on trigger point therapy. And go from there. I do know alot of different techs but specilize in none. I want to change all that.

I think licensing rules are overwrought. If you aren't any good the free market system will weed you out, but that's a topic for another day.) Now, after taking hundreds of hours of courses I can say that I gained valuable knowledge from them, but still rely on my instincts to guide me and create new techniques. But I agree, I see some of the curriculum on massage school websites and I bust out laughing at some of the stuff they are "teaching." It seems like they are often straining to make stuff up that sounds important but isn't.

I agree.  It seems there's a certification course for everything....

When does enough become enough?  Well, IMO, that depends solely on you and your interests.  I find that I go through phases about what I want to learn and add.  Right now I really like "light touch/subtle" modalities like CranioSacral Therapy.  As for retention, I find I keep what "works" for me and integrate it into my work, the rest is lost.I believe CEU's are a bustling coteforum.xxxe industry for our profession.  They aren't particularly well regulated and there are many of them that are meaningless tripe.  I'm not a big believer in mandated CEU's.  I think you should be able to decide when and where to spend your money to further your education and practice.  My guess is your chiro has CEU's she must take to keep her association happy -- how many different ways does she know to do adjustments?

I, like all of us, love to learn. I believe you have to approach the CEU courses out there a lot like the way you approached the selection of your original school. Is it reputable? Is it worth the money? The time? And you need to determine why you might take it: therapeutic to clients, marketable, or just because you want to pursue it.Things I want to pursue further upon graduation: reflexology (because I've always been interested in it); myofascial release (because I love what I've learned so far - which has been a lot - and want to learn more); hot stones (because it's marketable and easy on the therapist's body); aromatherapy (because it seems interesting - altough now that I've stopped smoking, my sense of smell has increased). There's more but this reply is already so long.
