Question about learning Massage Therapy, at 16

I am wanting to start learning about Massage Therapy, I am only 16, but that means I can't go to a school, and my parents are against the idea of me finding a 'mentor' Massage Therapist, near here, to show me and maybe teach me some things, so my only way is Books. Do you guys know of any books, to reccommend? I am willing to read up to 25, but I'd prefer to start off on some good, big ones that are very informative on techniques, basics, and such. I am really wanting to be able to go to College, major in Massage Therapy, and not be totally surprised by what they teach us.

I would recommend that you start with anatomy and physiology. There are great books out there about the skeleton, circulation, the nervous system. That can keep your mind working on it for a long time, and when you finally do get to massage school you will be able to concentrate fully on the hands-on pieces, because your science classes will be a breeze.

Yep, A & P is your best place to start.

Learning the bones (and bony landmarks) first will help you learn muscles and muscle attachments easier. One school I went to gave us hand outs from anatomy coloring books, and those really were some of my favorite assignments. Here are a couple of links for anatomy coloring books.

Also, if you are eager to start learning palpation (interpreting and understanding what you feel with your hands) skills you should try for Trail Guide to the Human Body. http://www.booksofdiscovery.com/products.php A lot of massage programs use this book, and it is designed to help you learn how to locate bony landmarks, and muscles with really great illustrations & palpation exercises.

As far as technique, I've used two books in school. One is Milady's Theory and Practice of Therapeutic Massage http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Mi...erapeutic-Massage/Mark-F-Beck/e/9781562535360. The other was Mosby's Fundamentals of Therapeutic Massage & Mosby's Essential Sciences for Therapeutic Massage: Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics and Pathology, http://www.amazon.com/Mosbys-Fundam...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1250399660&sr=1-1 & http://www.amazon.com/Mosbys-Essent...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1250399660&sr=1-2. You definitely get anatomy review in these books, as well as techniques and step by step pictures of draping.

You can always look into some basic massage dvds, if you are really eager to get your hands busy. Be sure to post in the ISO & Want to Buy section of the forum if you are looking for some books or dvds, you may get some great bargains.

I may have some older versions ('80's, but the body doesn't change that much ) of the Anatomy & Neurology Coloring books, at work. I'll check today since I am going in. So, before you purchase those, let me see if I have something I can just mail you (no charge). There may be a little coloring in them, but it won't be much. I didn't use them as much as I would have liked, and now won't be getting back to them.

I think I may still have my map colors too.... I bought a huge set... just saved them, because I am artsy and thought I'd use them. Let me scrounge around............. t028

Thanks for all the info! I am just hoping to go to the school, and be able to not be totally lost. I love Anatomy, and the human body, I am a weight lifter, and a trainer (for myself ) and I work all my muscles and such, I have learned a lot cause of it.

I can't get you my big set of map colors, but I did locate a set of 24 which are all yours if you like... it looks like one or two are missing.

And, I found my books:

• The Human Brain Coloring Book (only one plate has been colored)
• The Anatomy Coloring Book (only 15 plates have been colored - there are 142 in the whole book)

Another thought for shipping, is just to send them to "General Delivery C/O (fill in the location of a convenient towns/cities post office - doesn't even have to be your own)". Your last name could be put on the package, and your parents could pick it up. Years ago I had some birds overnighted to me to my local P.O., and that's how we shipped them so that the mail carrier didn't have to handle a box of live birds on his route.

Speak to them and if they are ok with it, they can contact me via PM for my website information (I don't give it out on live forum) which will have more info on me, my office and an address where they can send a release. They would also be welcome to call me at my office if they wished. It's up to them. The books are just sitting on my shelf gathering dust.

Nope. I like it cause it is so much like my favorite thing, weight lifting. It is so much to do with anatomy, and the body. I really think I could do it, cause I love them kind of things. Not as much as military history, but #2.

Hi Clover,

Been reading the posts, and I suppose I am a bit confused. You say you have an interest in Massage, but your parents are paranoid and will not let you learn anything from a therapist, nor will they allow you to buy books on the subject? Maybe the root of this issue is finding out what your parents have against massage or you learning about it. Many people have preconceived notions about what massage involves, find information online or at the library (there are TONS of anatomy books there you should be able to read!) for your parents to read and understand. You could also contact a massage school in your area and possibly sit in on a class or two to see if you are interested. Obviously you cant go to school til you are 18, and I highly recommend college to round off your education, it will greatly help!

I have always had an interest in bodywork, but I was likewise discouraged by my parents when I was 18 and initially interested. It took me til I was 24 to admit it was still a fascination and of interest to me, and now I've been doing it for 2 years and I love it!!!

The biggest part of massage (in my opinion) is being knowledgeable about the human body, so the suggestions to study AP are dead on!
