Spinoff: How do YOU like a massage to end?

When you go for a relaxation/Swedish session, what's your favorite kind of ending?

Just some nice compression type things then say something polite and leave. I do not like having the bolster removed (or pillow) as it is disturbing. The last massage I had I started on my back, then rolled over. I suppose this therapist likes to do a bit of shoulder stuff to end so I had to roll BACK over so she could do some closing stuff. I was like WTF?

I love a good scalp massage. Not a few seconds of scritchy-scratchy, but real, purposeful massage. I want to feel like my MT knows where the muscles on my scalp are, and can address them like all the other muscle groups.

I love to be "rocked" or "jiggle-jaggled" from head to toe, it helps me to recognize just how relaxed I am.

I adore the feeling of long energy sweeps along my arms and legs, and slow, gentle head and leg stretches.

There's this Breema technique where you pick up the legs and swing them from side to side, and I like the feel of that too. When I do it I pick up the bottom edges of the sheet on either side of the feet and use the sheet as a hammock to swing the feet and legs. It feels wonderful.

I also love energy work at the very end. Reiki was my introduction to massage in the late 80's, and it just zones me out.

My 1st thought was "relaxation massage"....what's that???!!!??? Geesh, it's been so long. I need so much work on my gimpy shoulder and funky neck (with occassionaly low back junk) that it's rare to get a nice massage just to relax. But...I do them them every now and then. I wish it could happen more often.

Me too!!!! This is my very favorite part of the massage and I am soooooooo disappointed if it doesn't happen.

:massage: After a brilliant massage, relaxation or otherwise, I really love having the following done - scalp massage, gentle full body length stroking and a gentle "Thanks for being here" or the like. Skip any one of them, and, well, it could be a world class massage, but, I wouldn't like it much at all. I'm spoiled, and the gals I trade with know the routine just like I know theirs.

I'm just curious, for those of you who like to end/finish with a good scalp massage, is it that you would prefer to have the scalp massage at the end, or have you experienced having a scalp massage at the beginning as well as the end of the massage?

I'm currently in school and learning the Swedish "routine". The way it's being taught to us the scalp/face is the very first thing. However, I have a hard time feeling really centered starting there, and think I might actually prefer to end with the scalp massage instead. Maybe some clients might prefer this as well?

Of the experience I've had receiving professional massage, which is relatively limited, I really liked the end of one massage in which I was ended prone, finishing with the back. The therapist draped my back when finished and gave my back a very short, comforting end "rub"/stroke. Then she let me know I could get up when ready and let me know she'd be outside when I was done. Actually this massage had began with the scalp and I enjoyed having at the beginning, but ending with another one would have been more than welcome to me too. Kind of like a complete circle? I love a good scalp massage at any time!

Finishing

The last thing I do in a massage are the abs. It is also how I like to be worked. When I went to Esalen training, they would cocoon the client in the sheets either bringing the legs up and supporting them with a pillow at the knees, or turning the person on their side and letting them stay that way for a while. Of course, it depends on how much time you have between clients.

I am one that prefers to have the bolster removed...as I am "out-of-it" post-massage, so just getting myself up off the table is enough as it is, without having to fuss with trying not to get tangled in the fandangled sheet, blanket, and bolster - LOL!

I like starting and ending on my stomach, with rhythmic rocking at the end.

I like to stretch on the table before getting up and it helps to have the bolster gone.

You know, I have never had a professional massage! Only by my dh (who is very good, but he doesn't "do" relaxation massages) or my classmates (son included), and I actually got HALF a massage by an instructor once as she was demonstrating her "style" to the rest of the class.

I know how I *think* I would like a relaxation massage to end, though. This is how I end my intern massages: I start the client face down, start on the feet, work my way up, flip, start back at the feet, and end with the neck, then scalp and if they want, the face. When it is time to end, I place my hands on either side of their head behind the hairline and I say "Ok, , our time is up for today." and add something about how I enjoyed meeting them/seeing them again, or a reminder about a stretch I may have shown them during the session, or something appropriate.

I guess I'm gonna have to go make myself an appointment with someone, just to see what I like, huh?
