I am always skeptical of such numbers being thrown around as facts. How did the researchers arrive at these numbers? Often they are including unproven cases, calling them undiagnosed, but insisting that they must exist. Scientists have been fudging HIV/AIDs numbers for over 20 years just to maintain government attention and research dollars. When I was in high school in the 1980s my high school class was told with certainty that 1 in 3 of us would likely contract AIDS in our lifetimes. I think I have heard of 2 people from my class that actually have or had AIDS out of over 300 of us- and at least one of them was openly gay.

1 in 125 is still less than 1% prevelance- my math sucks but isn't that .8%. That is lower than some countries we mongers know and love, such as the DR and Thailand, which are just over 1%. It is about comparable to Brazil or the U.S., which both hover at around .06%. Keep in mind that in urban areas in the U.S. like LA, specifically with regard to sex workers, the rate can be as high as 2-3%. Mexico generally has an extremely low HIV incidence rate (.03%) so TJ is more in line with Southern California than the rest of Mexico- which makes a lot of sense. Check out this chart:

Also factor in that these numbers do not tell what perceneforum.xxxe of the infections are among gays and IV drug abusers. The number is probably above 70% of these cases are gays/bisexuals (aka MSM or "men who have sex with men"). Another 10-20% are probably IV drug abusers (specifically heroin and meth users). HIV in the US is on the rise paricularly among young gay men who do not use condoms. There may be some spillover of this phenomenon in TJ from LA/Southern California as 75% of TJ gays have had sex with gringos.

Also keep in mind that all of the data about heterosexual men contracting HIV from straight sex is questionable. These numbers are generated based on self-reporting by the infected people. So when a guy is told he is HIV positive the health workers next ask him who he has had sex with in his life. Of course, many men on "the down low" and closeted gays/bisexuals, especially many macho men who are jailhouse queens and the like, report that the exposure probably happened with a female prostitute or random heterosexual hookup. The researchers don't mind this obvious lie because they get more false stats to scare you and me with. In reality the talk of heterosexual HIV/AIDS is used (rightfully so) to scare women from having unprotected sex with high risk men (bisexuals and junkies) because these guys have anal sex with women and that creates a heterosexual AIDS problem.

This is especially relevant in third world countries, especially in Africa,where the societies claim to have no gays (yeah right- they have a lot of closeted gays) and anal sex is often used as a form of birth control by as many as 50% of straight couples. It seems to me that the story of heterosexual AIDS is that bisexual guys go to the gay bathhouse or club, get ass fucked by a man then go home and pack the wife's or girlfriend's fudge. Meanwhile male meth addicts shoot junk with dirty needles then sodomize the old lady and wham. Crack whores and meth whores take it bareback up the ass from a bisexual man for a $20 fix and wham. In every case now they both have AIDS. and if you are the next guy to fuck the diseased bitch then you are playing russian roulette with your johnson.

Read some of the scientific literature to see what I mean. This is just a sample of the many different issues involved. It is a real eye opener.

Can I get HIV from oral sex?

Yes, it is possible for either partner to become infected with HIV through performing or receiving oral sex. There have been a few cases of HIV transmission from performing oral sex on a person infected with HIV. While no one knows exactly what the degree of risk is, evidence suggests that the risk is less than that of unprotected anal or vaginal sex.

If the person performing oral sex has HIV, blood from their mouth may enter the body of the person receiving oral sex through

the lining of the urethra (the opening at the tip of the penis);
the lining of the vagina or cervix;
the lining of the anus; or
directly into the body through small cuts or open sores.
If the person receiving oral sex has HIV, their blood, semen (cum), pre-seminal fluid (pre-cum), or vaginal fluid may contain the virus. Cells lining the mouth of the person performing oral sex may allow HIV to enter their body.

The risk of HIV transmission increases

if the person performing oral sex has cuts or sores around or in their mouth or throat;
if the person receiving oral sex ejaculates in the mouth of the person performing oral sex; or
if the person receiving oral sex has another sexually transmitted disease (STD).
Not having (abstaining from) sex is the most effective way to avoid HIV.

If you choose to perform oral sex, and your partner is male,

use a latex condom on the penis; or
if you or your partner is allergic to latex, plastic (polyurethane) condoms can be used.
Studies have shown that latex condoms are very effective, though not perfect, in preventing HIV transmission when used correctly and consistently. If either partner is allergic to latex, plastic (polyurethane) condoms for either the male or female can be used. If you choose to have oral sex, and your partner is female,

use a latex barrier (such as a natural rubber latex sheet, a dental dam or a cut-open condom that makes a square) between your mouth and the vagina. A latex barrier such as a dental dam reduces the risk of blood or vaginal fluids entering your mouth. Plastic food wrap also can be used as a barrier.
If you choose to perform oral sex with either a male or female partner and this sex includes oral contact with your partners anus (analingus or rimming),

It takes alot more of saliva last I heard from a microbiology professor who worked at the CDC was half gallon of saliva to actually get HIV, since in the blood you have a much higher concentration of the virus then other bodily fluids.

TIJUANA, Mexico - Half a dozen prostitutes swarm Angel Cabrera's car as he inches along the traffic-choked streets of downtown Tijuana on a balmy Friday evening.

It isn't just the women in four-inch heels. Cabdrivers, bar bouncers and the 60-something lady hawking sodas on the corner all want what Cabrera is carrying: condoms, thousands of them. All gratis.

Mexico has one of the lowest HIV rates in the Americas. The perceneforum.xxxe of people living with HIV/AIDS in Mexico is half that of the United States and one-third that of Guatemala, El Salvador and Panama, according to the most recent statistics from the United Nations agency UNAIDS.

But in Tijuana, a chaotic border city of 1.5 million people, the HIV infection rate is nearly triple the national average, and it has been rising steadily for more than a decade. Today, about one in every 125 adults in the city is infected with the virus that causes AIDS.

And with Mexico's border cities serving as funnels for workers and goods traversing the two countries, Tijuana's AIDS crisis poses a direct threat to the United States.

"I call HIV the uninvited hitchhiker," said Steffanie Strathdee, a leading AIDS researcher at the University of California's Division of International Health and Cross-Cultural Medicine.

A survey by university researchers found that 64 percent of 116 HIV-positive Tijuana residents crossed into the United States at least once a month.

Nearly half of men having sex with men in Tijuana and 75 percent of those in San Diego reported having partners across the border. And of 1,000 prostitutes interviewed in Tijuana, 69 percent had U.S. clients who crossed the border for their services.

One of the busiest border crossings in the world, Tijuana is the front line of Mexico's war against AIDS - and Cabrera is an unlikely foot soldier. A former drug addict with an old bullet wound in the back, he now spends his days and many nights distributing condoms and clean needles to almost anyone who will take them.

His daily patrols along the city's cacophonous tourist strip, filthy alleyways and concrete canal tunnels are known in academic parlance as "harm reduction," an effort to curtail risky behaviors such as needle sharing and unprotected sex that have helped fuel Tijuana's exploding epidemic.

At a time when the Bush administration is attempting to kill the District of Columbia's new needle-exchange program, harm reduction is emerging elsewhere around the globe as a central strategy in slowing the spread of HIV. The U.S. government opposes clean-needle initiatives, though some local governments and charities fund smaller programs.

But in Mexico, a heavily Catholic, conservative country, the government has quietly supported controversial measures such as condom and needle distribution to catch the epidemic before it extends deeper into the country.

"Before, it was taboo to even talk openly about condoms," said Jorge Saavedra, chief of Mexico's AIDS office. "Groups still oppose condom use, but at least we can mention the word."

HIV is a blood borne virus meaning that you have to get in contact with the blood of the infected person. I am talking about blood-to-blood contact. That's why it's not easy to get it from heterosexual activity where normal sex is performed. Actually, scientists are saying that the chance of getting HIV from a same-sex intercourse is slim.
