Using LMT number in advertising?

Ive been told it may not be a good idea to use my LMT number in advertisments and on my business cards. When I am looking at the ads the ones with an LMT number listed look more legitimate and professional.

I have just graduated from school and passed the federation test. My LMT number is a week or 2 away; so I would like to know the downside of using the number in my ads.

I wouldn't guess, as Breathe suggested, check your state regs. It seems to me there are some things regarding the licensing # that need to be adhered to in TX. I'm in TN so I'm not much help, but perhaps some TX people on the board can give you some links to online resources! Best of luck.

My question comes from the fact that I have been told when new massage therapists begin their business; their are people out in the field who do stuff to harrass the therapist. In Texas it is either not requiered, or if so uninforced, to post LMT number with all ads.

If posting the LMT number is going to open me up to harassment, why do it?

Where I am from it's not required, nor is it encouraged. I'm not really sure of the reasoning, other than the fact that it's not necessary as only you and your actual clients/employer need to know - and having it out for everyone to see could lead to someone causing problems.

No one here has their # on their cards. Infact, when we did a business card assignment in school, the students that put their # on the business cards we made, lost marks. But if it seems to be typical practice in TX - if you feel it puts you on a more even professional level, then do it.

That is my question exactly. I have read on this site, and been told by my professor at school, that there are unscrupulous folks who are looking to see who the new competition is. When someone is new to advertise they are harrassed. Somehow useing the LMT can open a door to that.

Florida law requires the license # on all advertising but I've never heard of anyone using it to harrass anyone?? Guess different areas have different customs??

Because FL - among other states that license MTs - has a public website that gives out your address - 90% of the time your home address - by searching your MT LIC #

So if you toss some mouth breather from your practice, he can go online and park in front of your house, which is a public place, and watch you come and go.

Ah, I can see how that would be a problem. So it isn't just newbies....it's anyone.

Sounds like some professionals need to be making some noise in Tallahassee.

i'm am required by law to have mine posted as well (we're even regulated in how our name and lic # appear on our materials). i have a concern, especially with my focus being more towards family and pediatric with it opening possible issues of stalking, etc. especially since i live in an area with a higher concentration of registered offenders...:roll: i'm no safer shopping in wal-mart so i figure i just need to be aware of my surroundings and vigilant of my family and clients' safety.

This is what comes up if you search the licensure board's online verification by name or by license number. i removed personally identifying information. it's not the actual address, just the city/state.

I don't know if they do it with all licensed professionals...i haven't gotten around to looking into that. totally unrelated, but i know that a few years ago they did that with the non-public education database for private and home schoolers. the HSers were up in arms about having their home addresses posted THAT publicly for any up-to-no-good to find.

From you comments I get the idea of what can happen. For me Im going to go ahead and only advertise in areas where LMT posting is required. Those advertisment places and the folks that advertise on them look professional.

The address info you provide is up to you. But since most MTs apply for a license before they have a job, they list their home address as their place of business.

MDs and RNs often have job offers before they file for their state licenses, so their addresses are more likely to be a practice or employers address.

I just typed in some random info into the DOH MQA search function and got this back -- looks like a home address to me!

A little scary. Not sure how the Big Brother fans can justify publicizing where you live is in the public safety interest, but I am sure they have their reasons

Definitely my work address.

In Florida you have the option of which address is listed. I can see where if you did not have a work address when applying, they would have to list your home address but if that is a concern then you simply notify them of the change after you find work and the problem is solved.

As you can see, I've been licensed in Florida since 1992 and I have never encountered harraassment or stalking of any kind.

Oh and by the way....you don't need the license number to pull up this exact information.

Out of curiosity I put in the 1st and last name of one of my LMT friends, the county she works in and with no problems at all, there was her info.

So, if someone wants to harrass or stalk you they only need your name.
