Theres been a few but what annoyed me was that threads lately about cost of drinks and bfs. etc. and a lot of opinions as to what constitutes cheap behaviour.
A bar that is situated away from Bangla area and that i use regularly when i'm in LOS. was frequented for a while by a young euro guy who worked in timeshare sales and was on a very limited income.
I accept that as he couldn't afford it, he didn't have a lot to spend on drinks for the girls etc. but what annoyed me was that when the bell was rung which on a good night can be several times with even the bgs. ringing it if they are flush, he was always willing to accept the free drink. Also if the girls bought food he would always edge over to them so they offered him some. I never ever saw him buy anyone a drink or buy in food and share it with the girls, even when times were slack for them.
Would you, if you couldn't reciprocate, accept free drinks when the bell is rung, or accept food from the girls.????

I dont know.. I think holidays v residency is a bit different.. I think also you can see people (backpackers) who think that things are going to be so cheap underestimate how much its easy to spend.

I can understand someone who is here long term and needs to take care over how much goes out.. Its not his fault that everyone else is on vacation and spending like it.. Though of course its is possible to be economical without being a taker but thats the important part, anyone that takes far more than they give back usually stands out fairly fast..

But I Always Buy Drinks For The Staff In The Bars I Frequent....

I Always Tip 60-100 Baht At All Meal Times Depending On The Service And Quality Of The Food....... When I Buy A Bowl Of Noodles / Satay On The Sois......then Ill Tip 10 Or 20 Baht........

If I didn't have money to be paying for myself, I wouldn't be in the bar. Period.

If I'm in the bar when the bell is rung I will normally (if I actually want the drink) give the buyer a glance to say cheers. Personally I don't ring the bell for the reason IJ gave above.

Based on that, I am not a cheap charlie. However I reckon I must be one of the lowest spending BMs when it comes to the bars (sorry bar owners).

There are 2 reasons why I don't drink much in LOS. Firstly I suffer from hangovers, so end up staying in bed the following day. I could do that at home. When in LOS I want to enjoy the fabulous warm weather during my wintertime.

Secondly, night-time is my hunting/prowling time and if I find a lady I want to spend the night with, I want to enjoy the sex and not fall asleep (they do sometimes :embrassed ) due to too much alcohol.

As for people ringing the bell, I gave up drinking those shots. They taste awful and give me bad headaches in the morning.

Theres 2 points I can see in the first post..

The first is being a cheap bastrad and a taker who doesnt give back... Definately a bad sign and bad char trait but also it has to be said that when theres no money self preservation will kick in.. Its one thing to accept a bell rung free drink but totally another to get into rounds with a group and not then cough up or to cadge drinks as a one way system.

The second is refusing bell rings and or ringing the bell.. Personally I dont ring tghe bell in bangla or bars where I only know a small % of the population.. I do ring the bell in offshore or P bar or other bars where I would know nost people and would be happy to buy most of them a drink.. They return it.. I dont feel the same in bars down bangla as in general its people who I dont know and who will be goine in a fortnight.

The flip side of that is that I also dont turn down bell rings on some kind of principal.. That works out badly when your in a bar and someone like Pablo or Keld or another BM who you do know is ringing the bell and treating the bar as they are then treating you to drinks and your not bell ringing back.. I do like to think I am fairly generous when drinking though and whenever I finish a glass (which is usually every couple of minutes) any one drinking nearby who is getting low gets offered and or bought one.. I try to throw a few drinks back at good guys who ring the bell but personally would rather order 6 or how ever many shooters for the 6 or so guys I am drinking with than buy everyone and anyone a drink.

No worries m8, i just gave my view as to what would constitutes a cheap charlie in the sense of bar time, but of course there are few other activities that you can indulge in besides drinking

For me LOS is about having a laugh with my m8's but i suppose thats because ive been around a long time. Picking up women and enjoying their company = bottle over the head for me, and it fair wears off anyway once u live there, of course thats not to say an ex pat doesnt want to indulge once in a while

hmmmm nice opener. Like the others i will not soon ring the bell, but indeed buy my drinking partners a drink as I feel no need to give a round for people I don't know. I will accept food and drinks if offered if I want or decline if I have my own or no need. I will lean over when a girl is eating, more to see what it is and see if I like it.

But then I also buy the girls icecream when i go for one myself in the hot afternoon, haha have had it happen to me that the girls that know that came running from there bars (3 or 4 different bars) just to get some icecream.

So cheap charlie, no i don't think so. Not throwing around money to show off but doing my own thing, Yes definatelly

Some drink non alcoholic drinks. 10 drinks will not effect them.

Some are FAST drinkers. 2 beers, would be a short time affair! Then they would move on to the next big spender!:cheers:

Not ALL girls ask for, or expect a drink. Only about 99%, I'd say.

If I see you in Patong...I'll expect you to "pay me a drink"...OK

Otherwise, as Johnny points out...France is an excellent aternate destination.

Last April, I dropped in on the Love Bar to introduce myself to Geir and have a look at the place. While I was there, the bell ringing was non stop and Geir seemed to be doing most of the ringing!! I had no problems buying a drink, in return, for Geir (some nasty glow in the dark Blue stuff if I remeber rightly) but I was not going to get into a huge round of bell ringing with a bunch of people I had never met!!!
Call me a Cheap Charlie if you will but as I was already 3 parts into the wind (from MTB) and knew that I would not be staying long it would not have been fair on anybody!
Sometimes (even when pissed) sanity prevails!

I spent a lot of time at one bar in Lamai last year for the simple reason the girls were good company and there was no hassle.

Each evening I would buy a round of drinks but never wanted to ring the bell. When I left I would always leave a tip to share round as they provided entertainment and good company all night.

I am still in touch with the owner of the bar, Pui and her sister and also maintain a friendship with one of the other ladies that visited each night.

Like IJ I am neither cheap nor extravagant but if they provide a good service, and I mean the atmosphere and treatment of customers, I will make sure I show my gratitude.

I cannot think of anything as desperate as poncing their food. surprised they put up with him!

i tend to buy alot of drinks and the simple reason is i drink fast and im simply embarrassed to buy just a drink for me, so i usually end up buying more drink sthan i get back but i dont care

one thing that bugs me, my brother does this all the time
i hate people who buy you a drink and then remnd you that its your round next
thats not the reason you buy drinks!!

I want to travel outside europe and surely don t want to get back to france, i went too much time in south of it, too much crowd and no thai girls :what:

As i m using a PDA phone (Qtek 9100), with wifi, i have skype installed on it, is there lot of wifi spots in patong? as with this i can call my friends in belgium for 0,02 € per minute!.
