Can anyone help me out with a case studywho has celiac disease. She admits that she is finding it hard to stickto hergluten free diet and would have continuous bouts of falling off the wagon. I have mainly carried out a general reflexology treatment concentrating on the stomach &small intestine

Good old case studies.
Ive finished mine just got one more assessment to do.
Anyways just fished my notes out on coeliac disease:
Malabsorption and falure to thrive caused by allergy to gluten in some grains which cause villi in the small intestine to atrophy and thus limit absorption. Symptoms anaemia and emaciation distended abdomen,itching, abdominal pains, diarrhoea-constipation.
Reflexes: stomach,digestive tract,especially small intestine Back up reflexes: spinal nerves to the area. adrenal and all glands, stress and immune reflexes.
Auxiliary Treatment: abstain from foods containing gluten. cleansing diet.

I guess you couldtry and keep them positive.

Thanks for your reply, yep the client has agreat family network of support which is good.
She has been trying to abstain from gluten but sometimes falls off teh wagon and then suffers afterwards

Hi,

Oh dear! Your client is setting herself up for so many problems if she does not stick to her gluten free diet.

Untreated Coeliacs are many more times likely to develop colon cancer to name but one problem.

A gluten free diet is an absolute must though the odd mistake shouldnt cause too many problems.

Another thing. It is a sensitivity to gluten, not an allergy which is something quite different. A true allergy causes the body to react violently immediately and, if not treated immediately, leads to anaphilaxis which is life threatening. A Coeliac reaction to gluten can take several days and is certainly not life threatening in the short term. I am Coeliac and also have allergies to which I have suffered anaphilaxis on many occasions. A very different and horrible reaction to the reaction I get with gluten.

Hope Your client manages to keep to her diet. I can understand the difficulty. When I walk past a bakery I find it very hard to resist! The smell of that lovely fresh bread! Oooooh!

I do hope your client sticks to her diet too. I also suffer from celiac disease, and while there is no "miracle cure" ( I wish there was i miss cakes an beer ). The diet is the best thing for her as Maggiek says the downsides to not following a diet are alot worse in the long run. If your clienthas a good support group around her that will benefit. I was lucky (or unlucky depends how you look at it) as my father was diagnosed with the condition a few months before I was as its an ihrediatory (sorry cant spell today) condition. That did give me a bit more support and was easier for my mom to accomodate meals for two rather than just one person. That was about 12years ago and as far as I know Iv never slipped up although at first it was tempting, now I dont think I could stomach "normal food" so please tell her it does get easier as it becomes a habit. On the plus side the range and taste of gluten free food has got dramatically better over the 12years Iv been diagnosed plus restaurants are more accomodating to I remember some just staring at me as if I was an alien.
I too have had reflexology ( I was a body for someones exam) the poor girls face when I said that I had celiac disease she went into a panic but I assured her she could do no harm and unfortunately it probably wasnt going to be cured by the reflexology, so I jut enjoyed a relaxing treatment, she too concentrated on the stomach and intestinal area.

I dont know whether any of that is of any help to you but thats from a person with the condition, I always think that celiac disease is an unfortunate name as people see disease and it strikes fear into them but thats what its called so Ill go along with it.

Yep I've finished my case study now and even though I only had to do four treatments I think the client really enjoyed having her feet worked on. As you say there is no cure but I hope I was able to help a little. The strange thing was every time I worked the kidney reflex it was always very tender even to the point of painful and it remained like that until I finished the whole four treatments

Hi All

Just a note re gluten intolerance. I am not but find if I eat some bread it gives me a bloated feeling and am still hungry. By accident rather than design trying to eat a healthy diet involved making our own muesli from the health food shop which was oats, rye, barley and putting in our own dried or fresh fruit. Works wonders and I am losing weight without trying! Presumably you should also drink lots of filetered water? Do not know a lot re coeliac disease but do know a few people who have it or are gluten intolerant.
