coccyx pain when standing

for about three weeks now, i have had the most ridiculous pressur/pain at the very tip of my coccyx everytime i stand. so much so that i make sure to stand up when no one can see me.

any thoughts? i have an appt with ortho on 12/9

What do you think has caused the pain? I had such pain during portions of either pregnancy or after childbirth, but that's probably not your problem. If you can figure out WHY you're hurting, it'll be easier to figure out what to do for it.... Has anything happened in that time frame (3 weeks ago)? Did you fall on your tail, or sit funny, or something?

no injury that i can think of. all i can figure out is that i've really let myself go over the past several months - i am not in good shape at all. i think that my pelvic floor muscles suffered and that was what led to my bladder sling surgery a month ago. now i'm putting it all together and realizing that weak pelvic muscles affect the coccyx too so it must be related. but it hurts so much! i exercised over the weekend and was very gentle, very soothing but the pain has gotten worse. and my office mate reminded me it hasn't been three weeks, it's been six.

so, i have an appt with ortho on 12/9 to get a diagnosis and in the meantime i'm being very careful but trying to strengthen the area myself. i'll let you know how it goes.

Hi Amanda, I would imagine that the recent pelvic floor surgery has caused this recent pulling on the alignment of your coccyx.

Find a Barnes' MFR practitoner who has taken the women's health course!

Where are you - there are lots of practitioners that do not pay to be listed on the Myofascial Release directory. John Barnes has taught approx 50,000 practitioners!

I've got that same pain, but from an injury. I fell down some wooden stairs in August and when I stand up from sitting (depends on the position) it is really painful. I have to lean way forward and use my arms to push up to help take the pressure off.

I thought that since it was injury related I just had to wait for it to heal on it's own, and it has gotten better but then seemed to plateu :cry:

Since it's been awhile since the injury, could some type of therapy help me? I'm a bit scared though since the pain would make me afraid to let anyone near there.

ANy thoughts or practioners near me would be great though. Thanks!

I would highly recommend CranioSacral Therapy (of course ;) )

No matter how long ago the trauma was, CST will help the body to access and release the energy cysts associated with the trauma. And it is very gentle and should not be an uncomfortable experience for you.

If Hinsdale is not too far, I'd go to Veronica Maxwell, OTR/L, LMT

If you prefer Naperville, I'd go to Wendy M Mehis-Sadler, RN

I am going to throw out a guess here -

It is possible that during your surgery (a month ago) this new pain (three weeks ago) may be the result of the positioning on the surgical table. Not that you would have been positioned wrong, but that the coccyx is a somewhat moveable entity, and if you were laying "on it" in just the right fashion for a period of time, the tissues surrounding it could have become bruised or inflamed.

I have also had experience in the past with a patient having to actually have the coccyx adjusted (and no, I'm not talking hokey hogwash here -- she really had a problem). It was an internal digital proceedure and was due to a fall. I mention this, not because you would need such a proceedure, but because it could be that the coccyx has been shifted in some fashion - just for another thing to consider before you ortho visit, to better give you some thougts for when you walk into his office.

uhhh :shock: lol. Not sure how I would feel about having to have that proceedure performed. I definately would need a heads up to mentally prepare.

I had that problem pueppi - a procedure on the exam table set my coccyx off something fierce. 48 hours afterward I was in class and my instructor did the Father Josef Reflexology technique for the lower pelvis/coccyx - I almost passed out it was so painful. I got up and walked out with the pain cut in half at least. Next morning it was about 25% of what it had been. The pain was gone by the end of the week and one more, soothing, Reflexology session.

Do you have any FJM practitioners near you Amanda?

I have a friend that has broken and re-broken her coccyx and she has found relief in CranioSacral and some intense root chakra energy work.

I hope you find some options for healing!
 


My coccyx was dislocated when I had my son and I had problems for years. Eventually a chiropractor turned up (I had no idea anything could be done!) that offered to do an adjustment. Two fingers into the rectum and click. It was amazing. I could ride a bike again, sit on both sit bones. Wow. He told me that for some people it doesn't hold, but I have never had a problem since.

I have never heard of Father Joseph Reflexology so I will have to check into that!

Cranio-sacral and John Barnes MFR are close cousins, so either should be able to help. I don't think that they do pelvic floor work in CST, although cstbrian could no doubt set the record straight on that.

Keep us posted on how things are progressing.

They are close cousins. I do believe we've discussed it somewhere here on MassagePlanet, that Dr. John Upledger and John Barnes worked together at one point. So there are aspects of the work that are similar.

We do perform pelvic floor work. The CST pelvic diaphragm release and sacral release techniques target the entire pelvic basin as well as L5-S1, the sacrum, coccyx, and ilia. Someone with a little more experience and practice could do more work focused specifically on the coccyx and any areas of the body associated with the coccyx issue. For example, if the issue has traveled into the dural tube, it will need to be addressed to help completely resolve the issue.

While it is very nice to go get a session (which I recommend) you could also try to work on it a bit yourself. Try this ... place one hand posterior over the lower sacral/coccyx area and the other anterior on the lower pelvis. Then just imagine sending energy into the area of pain/discomfort with the intention that your body's self-healing wisdom will know what to do with the energy to help you heal. You can send it from both hands or send it from one hand to the other - it doesn't matter. This may help to relieve some of the pain until you can get in to get whatever work you decide to receive.

Update on my coccyx!

I saw a very talented lady who is a chiropractor and also does trigger point and CST work. She combined all of these and after 2 sessions I am already feeling a lot better.

Turns out (not surprisingly) that the pain and trauma had caused my glutes and piriformis to develop trigger points, making my right hip higher and causing rotation which then actually put more pressure on the coccyx. It also caused some of my ribs on the left side to be out of alignment and C1 was WAYYY out and ... hey, no wonder I'm having so many migraines HELLO!

Almost all of my neck muscles were in need of treatment especially those in the occipital region and scalenes. Holy cow!

Suffice it to say I am well on the road to recovery since having the structural and soft tissues addressed at the same time.

Hope everyone else is experiencing relief as well!
