I will read that book. I just looked it up and the library has it. While I was in sports medicine many athletes had seveal injuries that followed them for years. That does'nt mean it's fibro. Same in my case; arthritic knee, neck injury, rotator cuff tear. They all bug me everyday. It does'nt mean I have fibro. You have a few injuries, why does the term fibromyalgia need be applied? That is what confuses me. Your scapular pain is not fibro, it's an old injury. Throw in a swollen ankle does not designate it fibro either. 15 doc's before one would listen to you? Hmmm. What does that tell you. See a rolfer, they keep my pain in check. I moved to the mtns out of the city for a more relaxed life, that helps to. I hope this book is not full of anecdotes. one story after another about peoples pain. Is the MD author donating the PROFITS to charity or his pocket. They rely on people like you. I do not need luck in my career. I see 30- 40 people a week. Good luck on the Governors race!!! You complain like a politician.

Tis a pity your mind is so sure that those of us with fibro have no clue what we are talking about. You are welcome to your opinions as I am to mine.

Went to a Rolfer while in massage school - worst experience of my life - even though others in my class assured me their experiences were wonderful. I was physically ill for days, and didn't come out from under the fibro fog for nearly a week. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone in my condition. Just because Rolfing works well for you doesn't mean that it will work well for all individuals no matter their state of health.

You talk about me as if I am a victim of some medical complex conspiracy to suck cash out of my pocket. LOL You are a very funny person indeed. That's so far from the truth as to be more laughable than the preconceptions you continue to spew about me. Again, good luck to you and may you be blessed in all you do.

Fibromyalgia as a diagnosis will probably disapear in the next 15-20 years. That is not to say that people diagnosed with fibromyalgia do not have widespread pain and fatigue....they do have these symptoms..

The american colledge of rheumatology first came up with the term fibromyalgia to name a group of symptoms they had no pathology for...according to the board members who first came up with the term it was never intended as a diagnosis...

There are several subcategories of disorders which are proabably all grouped togeather as fibromyalgia...
Including
chromic myofascial pain
caused by...one of several disorders
vitamin absorbtion disorder (including gilbert's disease and
many others)
Undiagnoses hypothyriod disorder (frequently missed if the
thyriod function fluctuates
Uncommon parisitic infections (like liver flukes)
1 of 7 people diagnosed with fibromyalgia actually have a narrow
opening where the spinal cord enters the skull causing a
global impingement sydrome ... this category was discovered
and is treated by a surgeon in chicago I forget the name...
Many others have a syndrome recently identified by Doctor Kenny
De Meirleir. Doctor De Meirlier has pretty much idetified the
biological etiology of chronic fatigue syndrome (and many
people diagnosed with fibromyalgia) and has a highly effective
treatment protocol


It's also interesting that there have been two long term studies of individuals with the same symptoms but different diagnosis. One group was labeled as having "fibromyalgia" the other group was not given this diagnosis although they fully qualified...five years later those with the diagnosis of "fibromyalgia" had stayed the same or worsened where as the other group showed significant improvement some with no symtoms left.....

Saying Fibromyalgia doesn't exist is not saying the symptoms and problems that clients experience are not real...just that fibromyalgia was never meant as a diagnosis and now is generally where people get put when the doctors stop looking for other reasons for their pain....

So, back to the original question, what are some effective techniques for a person suffering from fibromyalgia? I am seeing a new client next week, and in spite of the fact that I went to a school specializing in medical massage I have no expertise or knowledge about how to treat this medical condition (and yes, I think it is a real condition, not in my client's head). I am wondering if a heat treatment using a castor oil pack w/ heat might be helpful, as the client experiences her symptoms mainly in her back. We have scheduled weekly sessions to begin with, as was recommended by someone earlier, but I want to be able to treat her as effectively and efficiently as possible. Also, because she is in her 60's, would using heat be advisable?
