Wow, thanks! I've had 2 clients recently who are recovering from hip replacement surgery. It is fascinating to see exactly what they do and how they do it - one brought me everything his doctor had given him, and I got to read that. I've frequently wished I could reference it again - this will help! Both these gentlemen are walking without even their canes (both started out w/walkers), and it is SO cool to see them make such progress, and to be able to participate in that!

My clients who have had knee replacement surgery are further beyond that, but this info can certainly still help me help them!

Wish I'd have seen this when my Mom was alive.
I am sure it'd have been much more useful a few years back when my Mom had her broken hip fixed and my neighbor lady had her hip replacement surgery. But who knows, when one may need this info again.
I remember meeting a 45 year old woman at the dentist who had needed a hip replacement... I thought that was quite young though...

This explains a lot about what I can feel for scaring, and dealing with range of motion issues.

Had seen a knee done before on TLC or Discovery.

I'm looking forward to an invite from a surgeon friend who has referred clients to me, to observe in a couple of surgeries this summer. It'll be interesting to get a layer by layer view and some insight into post surgeries adhesions and scaring.

My friend the orthopedist tells me that most orthopedic surgery is not for the faint of heart to watch or listen too. 'Says its a lot like a car repair shop with all the whirring or drills, pounding of hammers, twisting of screws and plates, etc.

My favorite thing on cable tv used to be Surgery Channel because they showed films of actual surgeries - especially the orthokpedic ones..... Yucky but ultra cool - gave a true appreciation for the mechanical marvel that is the human anoatomy.

I remember them doing vasectomies and breast augmentation surgery, c-sections... all kinds of stuff! t103

Wow I just did the hip replacement virtual surgery. I cringed when the virtual hammer pounded the virtual stem into the femor. I'll have nightmares if I look at the real thing.

woke up during one of my surgeries, UGH!!! The cupric smell of blood and innards is not pleasant even when you are anesthetized!!!

Yeah, my officemate and I were watching those and cringing and saying "omigod." I mean, I knew that orthopedic surgery (especially hip and knee) are hardcore, brutal surgeries, but I had no idea just how much. :shock:

It is interesting to say the least.
It isn't as bad as it seems.
Afterall the rod, nail, screw, pin, wire, stem must be anchored properly into the bone.
When you "tap" the mallot you can feel the vibration up into your elbows.
I was in an ENT case this week where we have to do the same(on a smaller scale) to the septum for a rhinoplasty.
Surreal sometimes but TKR's give a patient mobility where in some cases they would be bedbound.
Some of the vendors we use are Arthrex/US Surgical/Synthes/Mitek. Google any of them and you will see some very interesting things.

When I was a vet assistant I almost fainted during my first ear crop. He cut off the flappy part of the ear and handed it to me and told me to squeeze out the blood from it. I was so bad at surgeries like that. Crops, Declaws, Tail docks, suturing around the face....goodness I'm getting queazy remembering it.

Okay, back to topic ~


Is there anything like that for shoulders or the spine? I might get the heebie jeebies, but I am still a visual person and like to see how things are underneath all the skin.

yowzers.. my grandma had double knee replacement right before the hurricane, and then had to recoup with 2 wks of no power.. she was so miserable. i'm glad i hadn't seen this then or i'd of gone nuts worrying about her even more.

Seeing patients every single day that have had surgeries, Knee replacement is the worst when it comes to recoveries. Getting full flexion or extension is rough. I have seen where someone has a problem with either or. All of the ones that I see and there is 7 of them all of them still have pain and this is months later. Its one surgery I hope I never have to have.

My mother is going to have this hip replacement surgery tomorrow morning. (And another hip later this summer...followed by a knee...poor thing) This anterior approach is supposed to preserve muscle and improve recovery time. Although muscles aren't cut, fascia is disturbed. I'm hoping someone has experienced working with people who have had this procedure. Are there any MFR techniques you can share? I'm not convinced that MDs are as concerned about fascia as we may be... She's been scheduled very little rehab.

Full disclosure: I'm the proud big sister of the doctor who is narrating this surgery...

I thanks for including the link, I watched most of the video. Your brother did a great job with the narration.
I loved that they mentioned the fascia though they did tend to sort of dismiss it as a non-important structure. Though that is true of most medical professionals I guess.
I would think that surgery would indeed be easier to heal from... as they mention you aren't cutting as many muscles. But there may still be some fascial restrictions which could effect ROM when the bone is healed.
I know JFB mentioned doing energy work while the patient was in the hospital for this sort of thing.
If you require a referral to a good JFB MFR therapist in Milwaukee, let me know I met someone last week who I think would be a good resource for you.
Walt might be able to give you some thoughts on frequency of PT vs. frequency of treatment with MFR...

Thanks Maestra! What type of energy work was recommended? I'm hoping that she's open to acupuncture, too. She had one treatment a few weeks ago in AZ. and really enjoyed it (despite her extreme needle aversion ). She has been volunteering at a cancer care center and has been exposed to a whole new world of alternative care. I think it is all quite Divine...

I would love to get that JFB contact in Milwaukee if you would please PM the info. Since she seems bent on having all three surgeries this summer, I'd love to have as much healing on board as possible for her.

As for the type of energy work, I don't recall him specifying, sorry!
I would think Acupuncture would be good too. Sorry I can't help with referrals there!

I think you will find that John usually talks about doing just what you would ON the body, but just OFF the body!

In this case you would rest your hands very lightly OVER the surgical area.

I am not very energy-inclined, but people really do feel the benefit of off-body work.
