Massage chairs - do you use them?

Hi all,

Just wondering if you all used a seated massage chair (the on-site kind) for your IHM treatments?

Hi Triathlon789, I do use an "on-site" massage chair for doing my Indian Head treatments. When I did my training we used a normal household chair. Our teacher had one of these "on-site" chairs with her so that we could try it out, so I did and found it far more comfortable to sit on as the client and when doing the treatment it made the body more accessibleto massage. I get the client to lean forward, for about the first ten minutes, while I work on their back then I get them to sit up so that I can do their face then head last. I bought an Earthlite chair from the Injury Prevention Massage company (via EBAY though as it was cheaper).

I also plan to study the "on-site" accupressure massage shortly so I knew I would be using my chair for that too.
I plan to take these treatments into the workplace so for me it was a worthwhile investment and for that reasonI have not bought a massage table (yet!). If you already have a massage table you can buy a "table top" head rest ( which my teacher also brought along to our course for us to try out) and a few of the students that already owned massage tables were keen to buy these instead of the full chair.

Hello

I work from home and tend to use a directors chair for my IHM. The client's back is accessible as the chair has a low back. Then I use a pillow between me and the client and get them to lean back into it when doing the scalp and face.

I use a drum stool, bought from a music supplies shop on Ebay. It's sturdy, adjustable and folds up for storage. The only problem I find is that clients who tend to slouch, slouch quite a lot on this stool, so I wonder if a chair with a back might help them to relax back better. If the client sits 'properly' with feet firmly on the floor the stool works fine.

I have only ever done the massage in a directors chair with me on a wheely stool, but when I am practising I'm going to get an adjustablekneel-chair for the client to sit on. )You know, the ones where your knees are bent with your feet behind you.) I suspect the seated accupressure chairs are probably a lot more comfortable, but until I've earnt some more money....

I would not recommend a kneeling chair. I had one of these for use in the office, and after 20 mins maximum, your knees really hurt. They sound a good idea, but once I investigated further, I found out that other people had tried them and not got on with them either. Also, my Chiropractor recommended that you shouldn't use them for longer than 20mins in any one go.

If your IHM lasts for about 30 mins like mine does, I wouldn't recommend a kneeling chair.

i use a directors chair also. find it easy as you can work on the back as the back of the chair is cloth so can work thro it. a chair with a back is a must also in my opinion, as i know that i wouldnt be able to relax if i was just on a stool.

That's OK Michelle, interesting to see your comments, I think I shall look into something else more comfortable.
