No problems with the candles, but I'm pretty *Royal* about shutting everything off/down, etc whenever I leave the room. The one thing that you don't see in the picture (i removed it for aesthetics!) is the fire extinguisher that's always right by the fireplace.

My insurance policy has fire damage protection...

My brother is a paramedic & Firefighter captain & I am a certified firefighter (fr when I was an officer on the cruise ships)...

So yes, it is a concern, but not a problem.

My carpet is industrial grey/beige/brown/black/speckles of everything... I hate it too, but I haven't hated it enough to redo it! ha ha.

I love the fireplace!  I am in the process of a redo currently (the boyfriend and I split up a couple of weeks ago, so instead of using his adjoining office suite for receiving payments and doing my paperwork like we had been doing, I'm  now looking for my own desk and trying to figure out how I will redo my office for maximum efficiency and comfort).I have found that if I re-hang the door that leads into my treatment room, I can fit a decent and functional desk, but I have no other storage, so I may have to build a closet, also, or have a cabinet or closet company come out and build me a wall unit for the unsightly things, which would be lovely!It is functioning the way it is for now, anyway.  I'll get a camera and take a few pictures of the way it is now, then of the redo.

Traci, sorry to hear about the personal stuff.But, about the storage...We didn't have any either... just that lovely large room. I used cabinetry from Lowes (or Home Depot). They are painted to match & have matching knobs/handles, etc. I used one tower from their bathroom linen closet line. (put that one in the small wall space behind the door... just am realizing that I didn't show that angle at all!) There's another bank of (approx) 4ft tall cabinets & we added a wooden top with molding to make it look great. All are anchored into the wall studs.I'll have to take a shot or two from the angle I see when I'm at the head of the table, working.Does anyone have any cool ideas for covering up that florescent light on the ceiling? I keep wanting to do something, but keep putting it off.I had also toyed with the idea of 'masking' the fridge/roaster/sink area, but don't want the room to close in on us. It looks small & packed in the photos, but its very roomey. (you should've seen me crowding into the corners up on a chair to get the shots I wanted! ha ha)Have a good weekend all.Jill/Sagetherapist

I enjoy seeing other's spaces! Who knows what this dialogue may inspire, goodness knows it's challenging in some of the places we work to handle all the considerations such as noise, smells, and other problems/eyesores!

This might work too.  I've been thinking of hanging latis up on the ceiling.  Painting it and intertwining a soft material and leaf vines throughout the holes.  Allowing some of the material to hang on the ends of the corners.  I will take pics of my place and let you all see what you think.  I want to cover up the ceiling.Any suggestions on covering the ceiling???Thanks Sherri

Step back Christpher Lowell!!!  I like Jill's idea of using the section of Shoji screen.  Another option is to use sheer fabric, tuck and tack the four corners well beyond the light fixture and do a criss-cross/lattice pattern of fishing line so it gives it a billowing, draping effect.  If the material is sheer, you will still have diffused lighting in the room.Anita/Skipndance

Jill,from the photos, your flourecent fixture doesn't look that bad.  You appear to have a sheet rocked and "coteforum.xxxe cheese" sprayed ceiling, so believe it or not, the easiest thing to do would be to change the light fixture if the flourecent bothers you that much.  As an upgrade, how about a remote controlled ceiling fan with adjustable speeds?  In the hotter months, a fan on low speed can feel wonderful.  You could also opt for some "special" lighting, such as a chandelier on a dimmer switch; a small one with crystals would create pretty little prisms all over the ceiling!  Good deals can be found almost anywhere if your timing is right, and I have seen some reletively inexpensive ones at home improvement centers.The next idea that is budget conscious is to go to an art supply store, where you can find decorative papers, and using Mod Podge, you can tear the paper into pieces and decoupage them to the florecent lense, which will still give you useful light, but it will be somewhat more filtered.  Adding a little wood trim around the outer edges might dress it up. also.I have a dropped ceiling that had ugly accoustic tiles, so I covered them in grass beach mats.  I have four large flourecents, which I would like to change to pot lights on dimmers.  The look now isn't so bad, though... the beach mats have an organic feel, and the lights seem to somewhat disappear; but with pot lights, I can adjust the lighting for any purpose, and I can free up my surfaces by getting rid of the table lamps that currently provide my low lighting, while creating some special drama.

Traci,Great suggestions.I'm going to ask the owner if she'll deduct the cost of a ceiling fan from rent & see if she bites. If she won't go, I think the decoupage idea might work... I had thought about doing a stained glass mosaic, but I would hate creating something that took that much time that I couldn't take with me when I go.At Sage (my last salon) I had a beautiful ceiling fan & light kit that had a dimmer switch & a remote control. I loved it! The ceilings were higher there, but I don't see why something smaller wouldn't work here.I think the fabric ideas are cool. I saw a little shop once that wove fabric, basketweave style through the divider bars of an acoustic ceiling tile grid. They painted the metal dividers in a beautiful contrast. You can't do a true weave, but run each length in an alternating over & under. That ceiling looked gorgeous.After posting about the shoji idea, I thought about taking a section of rattan (maybe from a window blind, door size) and framing that with some wood molding & letting the light shine through that for interest.I have a long weekend, so I'll mull some ideas over & bring them up on Thursday when I go back to work.Thank you!Jill/Sagetherapist

Hello Everyone:Wanted to get honest feedback on potential spaces that I may have access to when I graduate(I have 8 weeks to go)..but have been networking/marketing and 2 salon owners are interested in working with me.>The first salon owner is offering a 9x7 space currently used as a waxing room..has a door, but the top of 1 side of the room opens up to the salon floor..I've done some free massage on the stylist and music helped..but I can see where there could be some distractions.>The 2nd salon smaller, has no seperate closed room..only a space that's used by an esthetician..on one side of the shop near windows..screened off...but close to hairdryers, washbowls and stylist booths..This owner says I could use this space..only thing I can think of to promote privacy is to drape with curtains..similar to school...and maybe use headphones?? on the client..I found this unique electronic/padded eye/ear cover that plays soothing sounds or you can plug into a cd player..This shop provides services by appointment only..so there may be some flexibility for having the shop to myself when working on a client..Otherwise, I'm thinking to just do chair massage at the salon and market mobile massage for full body sessions..Any thoughts would be appreciated..By the way the 2nd salon owner has a more confident business ethic than the first...she's open to ideas to work as a team to build our businesses...so I would have more creativity and the 2nd shop is in a more lucritive community..danema

Danema,    I had the opportunity to be hired at a spa after graduation, also.  It sounded like  dream come true.  Except, on further examination.......the salon was very noisy and the room she planned to use was right in the middle.  I would have to share the room with the girl that did facials and have her stuff, plus mine, in the room.  Then they wanted me to use this hard facial table to give massages.....or I could use a massage table they had that looked to be 30 years old.  Very hard and very little cushioning.  I tried to talk to the girl that I would be sharing the room with and she didn't want to budge on giving people massages on a massage table.  So I left and days later called the salon owner up and told her thanks but no thanks.  I told her the room was not condusive to my clientele's relaxation.  And I thought I could get a room cheaper.  Look around.  The salon owner's are usually seeing dollar signs and want to make money off of you.  Some also, have never had a massage and don't know what is needed to make this a experience worth $50-70 dollars.  I figure........would you want a massage in this area??? If the answer is no, then move on.  I would recommend looking around for an office that you can fix up and will be quiet.  The world is too noisy already.  That's what I like besides the massage....the music and quiet.  Just my opinion.Jamie

My table is 32 ins wide; add on a couple of inches for the matress topper, blanket & linens & you only have 24 inches before hitting wall on either side. There's no way I could deal with that small a space. Same on the length.... only less when you use a face cradle. I couldn't do it. The smallest room I've ever worked in was 10 x 10, and then I had the table on a diagonal to accomodate my body mechanics.Jill/Sagetherapist

 I figure........would you want a massage in this area??? If the answer is no, then move on.  I would recommend looking around for an office that you can fix up and will be quiet.  The world is too noisy already.  That's what I like besides the massage....the music and quiet.  Just my opinion.

Jamie, so true, so true! These are precious words of wisdom IMO.  So many times we "settle" and we're never truly happy there! Which was my problem where I worked before... I settled. It was so stressful for me to work there. *shakes head sadly*

BJB-LMP has a point too. One of the first places I worked at I was offered a waxing room to work from. I turned it down... I KNEW my body mechanics would suffer, and I'd just end up injured so I turned it down though I liked that salon owner and she loved my massage.

It really takes both caring "landlords" be they salon owners, chiropractors, or others) and the proper amount of square fooeforum.xxxe  to make a good treatment room (work space - environment).

Sometimes we must see through the client's eyes...

as Jamie so rightly points out. Is this space nice enough to justify a $50 - $75/ hour massage or more? If you feel your clients would have trouble justifying it... then chances are your gut is telling you the right thing!

Thus the popularity of Outcall/Mobile massage, for usually nothing is more comfortable for a client than their own home.  That being said, tonight I had a massage for one of my clients who does not have A/C at his home, and I was dreading it as it was very warm and humid all day.  However, I happened to notice that they have a very nice and private backyard bordered on 2 sides with buildings, a third side by a cornfield and the fourth by a meadow, and suggested to him we do the massage outside.  His yard was mostly in shade and was currently enjoying a nice gentle breeze.

Since he is one who also tends to "run warm" like me, he readily agreed. (He wears thin shorts anyway, so we didn't have to worry about neighbors across the street seeing something they weren't supposed to.) I think it'll be an experience we'll both remember... not because I used any different techniques... but just because the natural surroundings made it a truly beautiful and memorable experience. Not something I could do every day... but something I'll definitely never forget.  ;D

I enjoy doing massages outdoors, especially on the beach. Lately I have been doing more beach massages. My clients enjoy it and they refer others.
