hey yall, quick question, whats the legal age for drinking over there? i dont drink much, but a beer or 2 might be nice (im 19). also, how long does it take to drive down there, im in oc, costa mesa. and how much is the average to spend on girls, etc (my pockets kinda tight...) also, is this parking on the boarder yer all talkin bout easy to find? does like, the freeway take you right there? (can you tell ive never even been close to the border? hehe).

Mike, To be blunt, no it doesn't help. Statistics are deceptive, especially when the data is questionable. I put more faith into the crime data released by Los Angeles and San Diego police than I would believe the crime data released by the TJ cops. Call that racist if you would like, but I assure you I am not racist. Many of us have experienced the corruption first-hand in TJ. My brother-in-law is Mexican, and he feels the same way.

Yes, I know Los Angeles and San Diego, which I mean to say is that I know where NOT to walk alone or walk at all. The same holds true for TJ. There is all kind of info out there about TJ with warnings by many who say where the dangerous places are, where muggings/robberies occur, and even where the cops have been shaking down the tourists. Guess what? Those places are on the blocks immediately adjacent to the ZN.

You are naive (no offense) if you think you can blindly walk around TJ anytime, any place, without fear of getting ripped off in some way. It sounds like you don't disagree with that now. But I do not "FEAR" TJ because of not knowing language or customs or any such thing. It has nothing to do with language, laws or customs. It is common sense, which is why this thread is here for guys to meet other guys going to TJ.

I have lived in LA and San Diego most of my long life. I have been to the scummiest places in dozens of other countries without problems except for in TJ. I have NOT been mugged by the people or had cops steal money from me up here, yet I have been hassled and rolled by the cops in TJ without doing anything other than walking in the wrong place at the wrong time.

If you want to use statistics, then one could say that there is a several thousand percent higher chance of getting rolled in TJ than in LA or San Diego since I have spent so much more time in LA and San Diego without getting rolled. But as I said, statistics are deceptive. Sorry, I don't agree with your statistics either.

Whether or not this is the appropriate thread for this discussion, I think we have both said what we think, and I doubt we will change each other's mind. Perhaps we should just move on and continue hooking up "buddies" in this thread as it was intended? There is more safety in numbers. Perhaps we can agree on that point.

Yes, there is a first time for everything. And I don't disagree with you. I just want to point out to you (and everyone else on this forum) that we need to be more objective. We need to put things into perspective. For example, let's consider this: "There is an even higher crime rate in Los Angeles!"

Here's the problem: Often when we look at crime statistics in Tijuana, we subtly multiply the risk level by some strange FEAR FACTOR that we construct because we don't know the local language, laws and customs. But if we're objective, we realize there's a higher crime rate in Los Angeles or San Diego! For comparison statistics, please view http://securitydriver.com/aic/stories/article-89.html.

Nevermore, you say you fear assaults and robberies in Tijuana. Please notice that your fears are not very logical. Let's put things into perspective. For example, as to assaults and robberies, let's compare Tijuana to San Diego. Why San Diego? Because we know San Diego is pretty safe. But, did you know that, on a per capita basis, Tijuana is even safer than San Diego California? Based on the quoted statistics, Tijuana is (6,999 / 1,185)*(1,400/1,500) = 5.5 times safer that San Diego!

Mike, No offense, but ignorance is bliss I guess. Not everyone gets into plane crashes or car accidents, but you know they happen. Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it isn't rampant. Count yourself lucky, especially since you say you walk through known areas where people are mugged by cops and others.

There have been many posters on this board and competing forums who have related their tales of woe. It only takes one time to screw it up for you. I had been there several times too, but one encounter was enough to stop my travels there for a while.

Can someone please explain it to me? I don't fully get it. This overwhelming fear of crime (in TJ) is too much for me. Can anyone explain the logic of it? Guys, your concerns about crime have been blown out of proportion! I've been to TJ twice, but never had any problems!! NEVER! I didn't even feel any hint of trouble! Maybe you guys think I didn't get into trouble because I played it safe. No, I didn't. Well, I was alert, but I also wondered around all over TJ. I even remained down there till about 2:00 a.m. on a Saturday night. I even ventured into some questionable pharmacies and back alleys until my feet started to hurt. I wondered around so much and got so tired that my back started to hurt real bad. No, I didn't get into a cab. I always walked, and always traveled alone. No, I never felt any fear, and never felt threatened by anyone, anywhere. Let's put things into perspective. In my opinion, TJ is about 20 times safer than being in the middle of a typical street in New York City, after midnight where a big black bum took my gas cap, right off my car, and right before my own eyes. And TJ is about 10 times safer than downtown Los Angeles, near the LA County building, near the metered parking area, where, in the daytime, some crazy junkie broke into my car. And TJ is about 5 times safer than the main square of Napoli, Italy where two aggressive Italian guys zipped by us on a fast-moving scooter and ripped off my girlfiend's purse. In my experience, TJ is a peaceful place and a nice change of pace. The Mexican guys are rather passive, non-aggressive, and respectful, and their women are also nice and harmless. They treat you well if you treat them with respect.

Not positive, but considering another of what has become my routine: Leave IE mid-morning to cross the border early afternoon. Walk across the bridge to Revolution, warm up with some Revolucion grab-ass, over to Adelitas for "arriba al cuarto" (I TOLD you I had "pidgeon-Spanish!). Grab a bit to eat, watch a couple of stippers, round two at Adelitas, then head back to arrive in IE around 10pm.

Anyone interested in joining forces?

Anybody got a scouting report about rising stars at Adelitas? Any newbies that came back (I know most aren't back, yet) from the holidays with their more experienced friends?

I too am an "Old guard monger." I have been going south for many years, and have never had any trouble. As listed above do the following:
Always park on the US side of the boarder, your asking for trouble if you drive across. There are a couple of "Pay to park" lots at the last offramp before the boarder. This will cost you $8.00. Then walk across, you will go through two set of turnstiles, once your through the second you will see all the taxis. Once your in the car, tell the driver you want to go to the Adelita Bar. They know where it is, and this will cost you $5.00 + one or two bucks for a tip. They will drop you right in front of the door, so after you pay, get out and walk right in, don't fool around. Once inside, sit down, relax, have a beer, and scope out the action. You might have girls come up to you, and ask for you to buy them a drink. Do so if you wish, however the bar charges a heavy price for the girls drinks, from $7-10 depending on what they order, even a beer. So before you start buying everyone in the house drinks, be aware of what you will be charged. Once you find the chica of your choice, negociate a price up front, always tell her what you expect, how much time you need, any special items you might want. Make sure BOTH of you are clear once you agree. Then go upstairs with her and have fun. If she dosen't do the things you negociated for, or at the price you agreed on, remind her that you both agreed on this. If there is still a problem, finish with her, get dressed, and let the front desk know what happened. They will take action. I doubt you will have any problems, but I have heard of problems, and I even had one bad experience, yet I didn't let it spoil my fun. Oncce you are done, either go back to the bar and have some more fun, or get into a cab and head back to the boarder. Do not walk around or go have street tacos! Get something to eat on the US side of the boarder. Almost all of the cases I've heard of someone having problems were afterwards, because they decided to "sight see." Unless you are a vetern, GO HOME afterwards!

The last year or so I've been walking from the border to La Zona,the better to shop for my "vitamins" .This is only during the day however,when there are lots of people around.I wouldn't suggest it at night.Also,the first time you might want to walk with a buddy so you can familiarize yourself with the route.At least that way if you get lost you won't be alone looking like a deer in the headlights .

what you say is true. I've always taken a taxi to and from, but like being dropped off at the border and see some cops hanging around. I have made quite a few trips by myself and only got stopped once (see my other post on this), but just think it's better to travel in numbers, at least 2. I am usually good for a Wed. or Thurs. trip if anyone wants to go.

I've been going for a decade and I've never taken a taxi. And when I park, I park on the U.S. side, usually on the street, after the meters don't count. I've never had trouble, and never felt the need to have someone "look out for" me. So that's over $20 saved each trip. And I always go alone. But, it's true, you have to be careful. Don't be rude or get drunk; don't wander around at night in deserted areas. Don't buy pills without a Mexican prescription. Don't carry anything illegal. Don't carry anything in your hip pocket that you wouldn't mind losing (I put my ID in my shoe), and distribute money in various pockets. Keep your eyes open.

I am headed down on Thurs. 5/26. Will be getting down there around 7-8pm if anyone is interested in meeting. I will be going to the Hong Kong club for a "warm-up". I am a "vet" and have been going to La Zona Norte several years without any problems. I always park on US side and walk across and either walk or take a cab to the red-light district.

I'm a longtime, frequent visitor to TJ. I too don't consider going to TJ to be dangereous, but I think it unwise to walk back to the border after dark.
