???Just wondering, in re:  our advertisements in the YP - have the yellow pages people ever considered putting Therapeutic Massage ads under "Medical Services"?If not, since our profession is that of a medical nature - can we be considered under this section?And those people doing massages in SPAs will be under such category, beauty salons under such, etc.Thereby leaving "Erotic Massage ads" in the Adult Section or Escort Services sections.

The problem is we want/need legitimate clients to find us under MASSAGE and the rest need to be moved to an entirely different section of the book.  Unfortunately, you need to lobby the yellow pages people and we are not organized enough to make enough noise to effect change.  Joe E. Just me but I'm really surprised that this posting hasn't gotten more response.  I can't believe that any therapist would condon this type of behavior and not be outraged by this happening in the marketplace.  If I were a massage client and perusing this site I would think that it was okay to suggest something illegal to a therapist since almost no one responded negatively.   It's a really sad commentary on us as a professional group. Unethical competition

Joe E.,I did not CONDONE anything. I do not agree with any sexual contact when legitimate Massage Therapy is concerned, nor do I agree with prostitution in general. All I said was that I understand the confusion...CONFUSION being the key word. It's important for a therapist to understand and relate to the public when it comes to this sticky situation of mistaking massage for sex. This misunderstanding has been happening for years and will probably plague our reputations for a long time. I agree with educating the public about the difference between the two professions, but to ignore the fact that there are many unfortunate people who feel they need to go outside the boundaries of Licensed Massage Therapy and take it to a sexual level, is impossible. My point was that it should be labeled something else.

I think it's horrible.  We do have a long way to go in the eyes of some.  But...it's time for some comic relief. ;DMy husband's grandmother is 85.  While in school, I asked her if she would like to come have a massage in clinic.  Her eyes got very big and she said, "Oh no dear, not me."  So ok fine, she's set in her ways.Last weekend, I finally realized she thinks I'm, well, a sex worker.  She asked my husband if my job bothered him.  He said no and it became clear she thought I was performing sexual acts.  I ended up telling her that I was more like the physical therapist she had after her knee replacements, just to sort of simplify it for her, as she's getting less sharp mentally.She was very relieved, because she's religious and was afraid the congregation would learn that I "am nicer to men than I should be." ;D

Calico, I still don't understand what you're saying.  What confusion?  You understand that people can confuse massage therapists with prostitutes?  I'm not trying to start an argument but if someone "confused" their dental hygenist with a prostitute and tried something sexual, they'd be hauled out of the office so fast they wouldn't know what hit them and it should be the same for any other legitimate professional.  Joe E.
